Hermosa Beach is 1.4 square miles and a very active beach community and has been named by LA Magazine as an “outstanding costal town”. The downtown area, located on the water in the middle of the city is known as “Pier Plaza” and is home to a variety of unique shops and restaurants and is also where many local community events are held. Ocean view homes are plentiful in Hermosa Beach with a median home value of $1.65M and its residents earning an average of $125,000 annually. Surfing, Skating, Biking and Beach Volleyball are year round activities here where the ocean breezes keep the temperature a pleasant 74 degree average during the summer months. You will find that most of the 20,000 residents (median age 39) were not actually born in Hermosa, but have chosen to make this their home!

People & Lifestyle

Outdoor activities such as beach volleyball, surfing, skateboarding and biking are inherent to the Hermosa Beach culture. Other favorite activities include jogging or walking along the Greenbelt, Pier and the Strand-- the paved path paralleling the beach and connecting Hermosa Beach to cities up and down the Santa Monica Bay coastline. Hermosa Beach and the South Bay are home to dozens of community and philanthropic organizations. The City keeps a full activities calendar from weekly farmers markets and holiday parades to AVP Tournaments and Heal the Bay “Costal Clean up Days”. You will find very friendly residents and as many homes have outdoor living spaces that are ideal for socializing with neighbors and passersby. This beach city is serviced by both local and city buses.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

From traditional surf & turf to more exotic cuisines and from comedy to jazz, Hermosa Beach has many fine dining and entertainment places from which to choose. You won’t find many chain restaurants or shops in Hermosa which add to its small-town charm. Some local favorite spots include:

  • Comedy & Magic Club attracts big name comedians like Jay Leno, Paul Reiser and Arsenio Hall
  • The Lighthouse Café first began showcasing Jazz musicians in 1949 and Miles Davis touredll through here. Now they host a variety live music/karaoke nightly and serve brunch and barll
  • Baja Sharkeez or Hennesey’s on Pier Plaza for watching sports and classic bar foodll
  • Palmilla or Radici for an upscale dining experience

Shopping in Hermosa includes: surf, swim, skate shops, home design & décor shops and unique one-of- a-kind clothing and gift boutiques. Manhattan Village Mall and Del Amo Shopping Center offer large department stores other national chain retailers within a few miles.

Things to Do

This lively beach city is also well known for its entertainment offerings including live music from rock to blues to jazz. Festivals, parades, special events, and summer concerts occur throughout the year. The three-day weekends of Memorial Day and Labor Day bring thousands of visitors to the Fiesta Hermosa Street Fair, which has been a tradition for many years featuring hundreds of crafters and artists and live bands.


The City offers a variety of classes and camps throughout the year for both adults and children that include yoga, tennis, surfing, theater and more. Two weekly farmers markets place in Hermosa: Wednesday’s on Pier Plaza and Friday’s on Valley Drive near the Community Buildings.


The Hermosa Beach Summer Concert Series is takes place during summer weekends and offers movies and concerts on the sand south of the pier. The community is active with such as groups as the Neighborhood Watch, The Kiwanis Club, The Rotary Club or the Hermosa Arts Foundation.

Schools

The Hermosa Beach City School District (HBCSD) is comprised of 2 public schools that provide elementary education to its residents.

  • Hermosa View School (K-3)
  • Hermosa Valley School (4-8)

Residents can choose between 2 public high schools, each in a neighboring city:

  • Redondo Union High School ( South Redondo Beach) 9-12)
  • Mira Costa High School (Manhattan Beach) (9-12)

There are 2 private schools in Hermosa and several others in nearby Palos Verdes & Rolling Hills Estates,
